Some of the world’s poorest nations will be thrust to the forefront of the global green energy revolution with the help of a £50 million commitment from the UK Government.

The funding, part of the UK commitment to provide “fast start” climate finance before 2012, will see the UK become the largest contributor to a £160 million global initiative to help boost the renewable energy sector in low-income countries.

Hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest are to be handed over to Nepal ’s rural poor, with help from a £40 million programme from the Department for International Development (DFID).

The ten-year National Forestry Programme will give Nepalese communities ownership of the thousands of hectares of forest currently under government control, helping some of the world’s poorest people to earn an income from their natural resources and put a stop to the rampant deforestation currently blighting the country.

People Power Company, an energy efficiency company providing residential monitoring and control systems, today announced it has closed Series A funding from New Cycle Capital, Seraph Group and other angel investors to support commercialization of the company’s inaugural product offering. Research projects with U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University will focus on open source implementation of wireless sensor networks in home energy monitoring and control systems. These joint venture projects will lower technology development cost while improving reliability and expanding the market for home area networks.

The warning comes from sustainability experts Envirowise and follows research which found that 70% of sustainability specialists consider the threat of dwindling water supplies to be equal to the impact of carbon emissions, while 54% believe the world will run out of water before it runs out of fuel.

It is predicted that UK groundwater will begin to decrease by 2025, with the overall amount of water available in English and Welsh rivers reducing by 15 per cent by 2050.
