A Zeppelin’s-Eye View on Climate Change in the Bay

Climate Crunch | A Zeppelin's-Eye View on Climate Change in the Bay
By using a tourist, sight-seeing Zeppelin airship to study halophilic, extremophile organisms in the San Francisco bay salt ponds, scientists are looking for clues that could indicate the consequences of climate change through modeling ecosystem change.

The SETI Institute and NASA have teamed up with Airship Ventures, Inc. to use the only Zeppelin in the United States to track how reverting a hypersaline ecosystem (salt pond) back to its original state as a wetland can be used to develop a dynamic predictive model of microbial ecosystem change.

Scientists Say New Observations in the Arctic Make Higher Sea-level Rise a More Urgent Concern for Miami

Climate Crunch | Scientists Say New Observations in the Arctic Make Higher Sea-level Rise a More Urgent Concern for Miami
One of the world’s leading experts on the ice melting in the Arctic came to Miami today to tell what he’s seen, and to demonstrate the implications for the region. He brought with him the most detailed maps and video animations yet of exactly what could go underwater this century in this area.

According to Dr. Gordon Hamilton, a research professor at The University of Maine, the old estimates for rising seas due to global warming were overly optimistic. Fresh data from the poles now indicates between three and four feet or more of rise by the year 2100 or sooner, which will have much more of an impact on Miami and the nation, he said. The scientists also provided a graphic demonstration of how high the water could get in just a few decades.

Africa’s Demand on Nature Approaching Critical Limits

Climate Crunch | Africa's Demand on Nature Approaching Critical Limits
If current population and consumption trends continue, Africa’s Ecological Footprint (a measure of its demand on nature) will exceed its biocapacity within the next twenty years, according to a publication to be released by Global Footprint Network on Tuesday, October 20. A number of countries, including Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania, are set to reach that threshold in less than five years.

The Africa Factbook 2009 reveals that while Africa’s population grew from 287 million to 902 million people between 1961 and 2005, the amount of biocapacity (resources that are available on a renewable basis) per person decreased by 67 percent during this same time span. Though this is reflective of a global trend, it is particularly alarming for Africa, a region where ecological deficits can translate most directly into resource conflicts and shortages of food, fuel and other basic necessities for survival.

On Friday he crossed from the European side of the Istanbul Straits to the Asian side. “Crossing the Bosphorus is a real milestone. I’m actually quite relieved to have made it this far, but it’s only going to get tougher to find used cooking oil to fuel the bus from here on.” said Pag last night.
